Muscle Building Article - Low Calorie vs Low Carb For Fat Burning
Ever since the re-emergence of the Atkins diet, even bodybuilders trying to build muscle mass fast have been swept up by all of the low carb - high protein - high fat hype. It’s extremely entertaining to sit back and observe how most diet “experts” or “gurus” criticize anyone that either eats a lot of a certain “macronutrient” (protein, carbohydrates, or fats) and think that’s the way to low body fat levels, which should help show off your hard earned muscle that you’ve built in the gym.
It seems like everyone is focusing on the wrong factor in regards to how they eat to build muscle or burn fat, and that’s that they only think about making sure they avoid this or they avoid that. However, in the Journal American College Cardiology, for 24 weeks scientists in the country of Australia monitored very closely a group of individuals’ calorie intake and activity level (they stayed at a metabolic ward in a hospital so that there was no room for error in this study).
They compared the amount of weight loss when on a low carb diet to the amount burned off on a low calorie diet. They found that there was exactly no difference whatsoever between the two groups. Avoiding carbohydrates provided absolutely no advantage in burning body fat…..exactly the opposite of what all of the bodybuilding magazines, websites, and supplement ads are telling you. They found that the bottom line to losing weight was sticking to a low calorie diet, regardless of how that diet was broken up (protein / carbs / fats).
What you have to take into consideration is the fact that the initial big weight loss you see in people that go on low carb diets is nothing but a bunch of water weight…..and, in case you didn’t know, water is not the same thing as fat!
As I say time and time again, it’s all about the calories!
Now, you may be reading this article about this study dealing with losing weight, and you’re trying to do the opposite….build muscle mass. Well, the reverse is true as well: when it comes to muscle building it’s all about the calories, regardless of the composition of it.
