Fiber: Can It Hurt Your Muscle Building Goals?

Fiber has long been considered an important nutrient used to in the prevention of cancer, aid in digestion, etc. But, is it something that can help or hurt your goal of muscle building and gaining weight? Remember, something that can aid in overall health doesn’t necessarily mean that it can speed up the bodybuilding process.

In a recent column in Men’s Health magazine, authored by nutritionist Alan Aragon, he’s asked a question on fiber. He’s asked “Will I absorb fewer calories if I eat a lot of fiber either before or after a meal?”. Now, I bet that this individual was asking in this question from the perspective of someone trying to lose weight and burn body fat, but none the less, we can look at it from a mass gaining perspective as well. Mr. Aragon, whom I’m starting to really respective a lot of his no nonsense answers, replies “No. Increasing your dietary fiber supposedly helps you lose weight, but not by blocking calories. Fiber simply makes you feel fuller, so you eat less. But even then, the degree to which extra fiber helps is minuscule…One study showed that people who took fiber supplements for 4 months lost only about a pound and a half more than those who didn’t”.

Now, if I were concerned right now with weight loss, this would raise serious doubts as to whether I should be pounding down the extra fiber because of it being hyped as helping out. However, looking at it from a skinny hardgainer’s point of view, it also demonstrates something. Notice that fiber “makes you feel fuller, so you eat less”. If you’ve been reading my articles, websites, and eBook “From Skinny To Muscular!” then you know the importance of eating a high amount of calories on specific days to be able to provide your body with the calories it needs to gain weight and building muscle mass naturally. Eating to gain weight is one of the most important pieces of this puzzle.

So, any substance that would make it harder for me to eat enough calories is something that’s going to raise a red flag for me, especially if I already have a small appetite! Don’t work against yourself. No, I’m not suggesting you avoid eating fiber, but I am suggesting the me, personally, I would keep it to a minimum on days that my main goal is to eat a high degree of muscle buildingweight gaining calories.
