“Bulgarian” Doesn’t Mean More Muscle Mass
I’m getting a little fed up with individuals thinking that just because a particular workout routine designed to gain weight and build muscle originates from some far away country that it automatically makes it effective at muscle building. Case in point, the whole “Bulgarian system” fever.
This is in no way in disrespect to the country of Bulgaria and anything there within. However, “Bulgarian” doesn’t necessarily mean more muscle mass, just like “American”, “Puerto Rican”, “Canadian”, etc., doesn’t necessarily mean more muscle mass either. What determines if a particular workout routine for gaining weight naturally and building muscle fast actually works at doing that is not where it comes from, but the actual design of the exercises, sets, putting together of the workout program, etc.
This whole obsession with workout routines that come from Bulgaria started when out of the blue in the Olympics Bulgarian teams in weight lifting, power lifting, and Olympic lifting started taking all of the gold medals and setting records. So, of course, non thinking weight trainers began blindly associating “Bulgarian workout routines” with weight gain and muscle building. To me, this is down right ridiculous!
First off, the Bulgarian teams were excelling at weight lifting, power lifting, and Olympic lifting, NOT bodybuilding. Those are two very different and separate paths and accomplishments. Second, it’s VERY well known, after certain “revelations”, that the reason that the Bulgarian teams were blowing away all of the other countries wasn’t because of some super duper, high tech, top secret workout strategies…….no. It was because of good, old fashion s-t-e-r-o-i-d-s. ‘Nuff said!
Charles Poliquin, in a recent issue of IronMan Magazine, brings up some excellent points. To quote him, he says “How many great bodybuilders have come from Bulgaria? Before the Berlin Wall fell, bodybuilding was considered an anti-government activity in Bulgaria. I doubt that the Bulgarian government, given the country’s struggling economy, would invest in research on “the effects of tri-setting on biceps hypertrophy in teenage males.”. Charles, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
So, I tell you, fellow workout enthusiast, it’s not WHERE the workout routine is from, but in fact HOW IT’S PUT TOGETHER that will make a difference if it’s going to help you build muscle and gain weight naturally.
